This morning we were driving back to the condo from the wonderful Chicago Botanic Garden, when Brack/Grandpa noticed a fire hydrant by the side of the road with a striped “rod ” extended upward….and then two more just like it:
So….what’s with the “rod”?

This is Chicago! The hydrant is easily visible to firemen during much of the year...but in winter? There could be four feet of snow, completely covering the hydrant! So the rod is there to make sure the location of the hydrant is easily visible.
