Maybe you had the idea that the route could be designated by a list of the coordinates of each successive hold…..like, row and column numbers:

4,3 - 5,5 - 5,9 - 6,11 etc

Of course, it would be challenging to remember the sequence of numbers while you’re climbing - or even to feel certain of which hold above you is the correct next one. Then I found out that someone had a really super idea that uses a feature of specially-designed holds, such as the one shown below
