Mistero del Muro
While visiting Denver, Brack visited one of the Movement climbing gyms. One muro (wall) featured some interesting sections. Like the regular climbing routes, this wall had hand- and foot-holds, but these were attached to three rectangular “sub-walls”, that were hinged at their base so that they could be tilted (see picture). In this way, you would not be climbing up a vertical wall (hard!), but rather up an “overhanging cliff” (really hard!)
Climbers at the gym can adjust the steepness of the wall by using the controls just to the right of the black wall - see pic below.
Most walls in the gym feature several climbing routes, with varying degrees of difficulty, which the gym workers devise. These routes often overlap, but you can know which holds to use for the path you’ve chosen, because the holds on each route are all the same color. These tilting walls work in a different way, however, which you can see in the two walls to the left of the tilted black wall and in the picture below. These walls contain an array of many holds, and allow you to design your own route……but how would you mark it, or tell another person which holds to use for “your” custom route?
